Professor Profile Ta-Sung Lee received the B.S. degree from National Taiwan University in 1983, the M.S. degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1987, and the Ph.D. degree from Purdue University, W. Lafayette, IN, in 1989, all in electrical engineering. In 1990, he joined the Faculty of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C, where he holds a position as Professor of Department of Electrical Engineering. From 2005 to 2007, he was Chairman of Department of Communication Engineering, and from 2007 to 2008 and 2012 to 2013, he was Dean of Student Affairs of NCTU. His other past positions include Technical Advisor at Information and Communications Research Labs. of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Managing Director of MINDS Research Center, College of ECE, NCTU, and Managing Director of Communications & Computer Continuing Education Program, NCTU. He was Vice Chairman and Chairman of IEEE Communications Society Taipei Chapter from 2005 to 2008, a Board Member of IEEE Taipei Section from 2007 to 2010, an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing from 2009 to 2013, and IEEE Signal Processing Society Regional Director-at-Large for Region 10 from 2009 to 2013. He is currently an Associate Editor of Journal of Signal Processing Systems. Dr. Lee was appointed Commissioner of National Communications Commission (NCC) by the Premier of Taiwan, R.O.C., for the term 2008-2010. He has been Chairman of Telecom Technology Center, a government funded agency for telecommunications R&D, since 2013. Dr. Lee is active in research and development in advanced techniques for wireless communications, such as smart antenna and MIMO systems, sensor networks, cross-layer design, and hardware/software co-design of advanced communication systems. He has led many collaborative projects in several national research programs, such as “Program for Promoting Academic Excellence of Universities– Phases I and II,” “National Science and Technology Program for Telecommunications” and “4G Mobile Communications Research Program.” He has published more than 160 peer-reviewed papers and patents. Dr. Lee is an IEEE Fellow, and has won several awards for his research, engineering and education contributions; these include two times National Science Council (NSC) Superior Research Award, 1999 Young Electrical Engineer Award of the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering (CIEE), 2011 Distinguished Electrical Engineering Professor Award of CIEE, two times NCTU Distinguished Scholar Award, and NCTU Teaching Award. Dr. Lee was elected IEEE Fellow in 2016 for leadership and contributions in communication systems and signal processing.
