Universities pair up on electronic nose system that detects lung cancer (2018/06/07)

The annual Computex Taipei is underway at the World Trade Center, and among the gadgets showcased is an array of high-tech healthcare innovations. One highlight is an electronic nose that can screen for pneumonia and lung cancer in just minutes. There's even a Virtual Reality game that acts as physiotherapy for the players involved. 

This machine can perform a basic lung cancer screening in just three to five minutes. The electronic nose system was developed in partnership by National Tsing Hua University and Taipei Medical University.

The patient breathes into the airbag and the breath is converted by gas sensors into signals of different sizes, which are compared against our database to determine whether the patient has pneumonia or another disease. In our study, the accuracy rate reached over 90%.

A traditional screening for pneumonia can take three to five days to complete. A quick exhale into the electronic nose can raise the alarm on suspicious bacteria, helping the patient catch and treat their diseases earlier.

Another unique invention on the showground is this VR experience. Headset strapped on, the player swerves while holding the controllers, utterly absorbed. The immersive game was developed by a startup with a team of US doctors, and serves as physiotherapy for neuralgia and other conditions.

The advantage is that it provides a very engrossing therapy session. Our expertise is in making a game out of therapy, and creating an extremely true-to-life experience. For therapists, the game can save a lot of time and energy.

The developer said that patients can take rehabilitation courses targeting specific areas, as prescribed by their doctors. The novel therapy has been submitted for FDA review, and, if all goes well, will launch within two years and expand across the Asian market.
